Pool Removal · Salt Lake City
Swimming pool removal in Salt Lake City runs $7,000 to $12,000 for a typical in-ground pool, and takes three to five days on site. The real decision is not price, it is partial removal versus full removal, because that choice determines whether you can ever build on that part of the yard again. We explain both before you sign anything.

At a glance
Typical cost
$7,000 – $12,000
In-ground residential pool. Partial removal sits at the low end, full removal at the high end.
Time on site
3 – 5 days
Drain, demolish, backfill in compacted lifts, and grade. Weather can add a day.
Permit
Usually required
Most Salt Lake Valley cities treat pool removal as demolition. We pull it either way.
Buildable after
Full removal only
Partial removal leaves fill that is fine for lawn and patio, not for a structure.
The decision that matters
Both are legitimate. Contractors who only quote one of them are quoting the one that suits their equipment. Here is the honest comparison, and the short version is that it depends entirely on what you plan to put where the pool is.
Partial removal
The top two to three feet of the pool shell comes off, the bottom is broken up so water drains through instead of pooling, and the hole is filled with gravel and soil compacted in lifts. Faster, cheaper, and the right answer when the space is becoming lawn, garden, or patio.
Full removal
Every piece of concrete, rebar, plumbing, and liner comes out of the ground, and the void is backfilled with engineered structural fill compacted in lifts and tested. Costs more and takes longer, and it is the only version that leaves you soil you can build on.
Not sure which one you need? Tell us what you want the space to be in five years. If the answer involves anything with a foundation, go full removal. If it involves grass, partial removal saves you real money and does the job. In plain terms: partial pool removal is $7,000 to $9,500, full removal is $9,500 to $12,000, and surrounding concrete decking is $4 to $5 per square foot. Not sure which method fits your yard? Partial vs full pool removal walks through the trade-off.
Scope of work
A pool is rarely just a pool. Decking, fencing, and equipment are usually part of the same job, and doing them together on one mobilization costs less than three separate trips.
Gunite, concrete, fiberglass, and vinyl liner pools. Rebar and steel are separated out and sent to a metal recycler.
Concrete decking, pavers, coping stone, and the slab around the perimeter. Priced with our standard concrete removal rates.
Safety fencing, gates, and posts pulled and hauled. Footings dug out rather than snapped off at grade.
Pumps, filters, heaters, and the buried plumbing runs. Electrical is disconnected by a licensed electrician first.
Clean structural fill placed in lifts and compacted with a plate or roller, not dumped in and walked away from.
The area graded to drain away from the house and raked out, ready for sod, seed, gravel, or a landscaper.
Pricing
Pool size, backyard access, and how much fill has to be trucked in are the three things that move the price. A pool behind a six-foot gate with no side yard costs more than a pool with a wide-open driveway, every time.
Ranges reflect typical Salt Lake County residential pools and include demolition, haul-off, backfill, compaction, and rough grade. Access, pool size, and imported fill volume affect final pricing. Your written quote is exact and free, and the price does not change unless the scope does.
How it works
01
Drain and disconnect
The pool is drained to an approved discharge point, gas and electrical to the equipment are disconnected, and we pull the permit.
02
Demolish the shell
Decking and coping come off first, then the shell. Steel is separated for recycling and concrete is hauled out by the load.
03
Backfill and compact
Clean fill goes in and gets compacted in lifts. This is the step cheap bids skip, and it is why yards settle two years later.
04
Grade and clean up
Final grade set to drain away from the structure, site raked, and photo documentation sent for your records.
Resale and buildability
Plan on disclosing it. A filled pool is generally treated as a material fact about the property in Utah, and the seller disclosure form is where it belongs. Buyers are not scared off by a removed pool. They are scared off by a removed pool nobody can produce paperwork for.
That is why we document the work. You get the permit, the fill material used, the compaction method, and dated photos of the void before and after backfill. If a buyer's inspector asks what is under the lawn, you hand over a file instead of a guess.
This is practical guidance from doing the work, not legal or real estate advice. Your agent or attorney should confirm exactly what your disclosure requires.
Keep this with your closing documents. It answers almost every question a buyer's inspector will raise.
Service areas
We remove pools throughout Salt Lake County and along the Wasatch Front. Access is the biggest variable, so send a photo of the gate or side yard with your inquiry and the quote will be much closer to final.
